Greek Olympic champion Miltos (Miltiadis) Tentoglou has once more added to his winning streak for the year, achieving a gold medal for the men’s Long Jump at the European Championships in Krakow, Poland on Saturday.
His 8.34m winning leap was the fourth and last attempt at the jump amidst unfavourable weather conditions.
Speaking later to reporters, Tentoglou commented on the wind conditions, his biggest obstacle on the day.
“It wasn’t on purpose that I left it [the winning leap] for last. The wind was unfavourable today, conditions were not good and I struggled. Not just me, every athlete got affected I think.
“[…] It’s really close to my personal record – 8.38m – and if it weren’t for the wind I believe I could have gone beyond 8.40m today.”
The winning jump marked the top European performance for 2023 so far, and the third time that Tentoglou achieves maximum points for Greece at the European Athletics Team Championships.
Earlier this year, he also claimed a third successive European indoor title, becoming the first male long jumper to achieve this, at the indoor European Championshipos in Istanbul.
