The United Nations Secretary-General’s personal envoy María Ángela Holguín visited the Athienou-Pyroi area earlier today, where discussions continue over opening a new crossing point in Cyprus.
During the visit, Athienou Mayor Kyriakos Kareklas briefed Holguín on the broader area and specific issues related to the proposed crossing point opening.
The Greek Cypriot side has sought for years to open the crossing point, which would connect Athienou to Nicosia via the old Larnaca-Nicosia road.
However, the Turkish side rejects the proposal due to strong objections from occupation forces stationed in the area.
The Greek Cypriot side has proposed using the road exclusively for bypass crossing purposes, but the Turkish side continues to reject this alternative arrangement.
The Athienou-Pyroi area represents one of several locations under discussion for potential new crossing points across the UN buffer zone.
