The best preserved Roman theatre in the world? | Aspendos, Antalya
Aspendos is one of the best-preserved Roman theatres in the world, and it is still in use today. Located near Antalya, Türkiye, this 2,000-year-old theatre continues to host concerts, operas and plays, thanks to its remarkable acoustics.
In this video, we visit the ancient site, test the acoustics ourselves, and explore what made Aspendos such an important cultural and commercial centre during Roman times. While it may be known for its theatre, the site was once a thriving Roman city, complete with aqueducts and basilicas — and before that, it was a Greek colony, with roots dating back to the 10th century BCE.
Additionally, Aspendos is part of Türkiye’s Night Museum initiative, allowing visitors to experience this incredible monument after dark.
