A new emergency message via the 112 emergency number was sent to residents of the Pissonas area in Evia on Sunday afternoon, urging them to evacuate towards Kathenoi due to a resurgence of the wildfire that broke out on Saturday, July 26.
The message stated: “Forest fire in your area. If you are in the Pissonas Evia area, evacuate towards Kathenoi. Follow the instructions of the authorities.” Although the situation on the fire front shows improvement, firefighting forces continue to operate in many areas with active hotspots and flare-ups. Water drops have been carried out by aerial means since the morning, while overnight, ground forces took advantage of the calm winds to contain the fire fronts.
Fire Contained in Chania – Extinguishing Efforts Continue
The fire in the Municipality of Kantanos and Selino in Chania is fully contained, according to the Civil Protection Coordinating Center. Hundreds of firefighters and volunteers continue to work to extinguish scattered hotspots across a front of over 20 kilometers.
200 firefighters with 40 vehicles, water tenders, and EMOND units are operating in the area, with continuous water drops from the air. Authorities are trying to prevent new flare-ups that threaten agricultural crops, olive groves, beehives, and residences. So far, damage has been recorded in four houses and one church, while restoration work is underway on electricity, water, and mobile phone networks.
Messinia Front Subsides
The fire front in Messinia shows a better picture. However, firefighting forces remain on site, as there are small hotspots within the burned areas and fears of flare-ups.
Other Fire Fronts
In Kythira, there is still an active front where 67 firefighters with 2 forest commando teams, 22 vehicles, and volunteers are operating, while so far, 3 helicopters and 2 aircraft have been deployed for aerial firefighting.
In Attica, specifically in Drosopigi and Kryoneri, there is no active front, but forces remain in the areas due to fear of flare-ups. Many houses are without power.
Finally, in Asvestopetra, Ptolemaida, one of the fronts caused concern due to the winds in the area.
