Following letters to Security Council members and other officials by foreign minister Constandinos Kombos, Nicosia has further intensified its campaign for the immediate release of the refugees being illegally detained in the occupied areas for two weeks.
‘The government strongly condemns the continued illegality and provocation of holding five Greek-Cypriot citizens of the Republic of Cyprus, who are being inhumanely treated by the occupation regime’, said Victoras Papadopoulos, director of the President’s Press Office.
Papadopoulos noted that the violations of fundamental human rights continued yesterday, with yet another illegal process, insulting to the essence of justice.
The decision by the so called military court in the occupation regime to illegally detain the five Greek Cypriots who were visiting their properties for a further two weeks, Papadopoulos added, is ample proof that Turkey and its subservient regime are blatantly disregarding every aspect of international law.
‘It is clear now’, he further stressed, that this premeditated action, admitted by Turkish-Cypriot leader Ersin Tatar aims at intimidating Greek-Cypriots who cross over to the occupied territories and those who appeal to the compensation committee there.
‘Kidnapping, hostages and a parody of a trial’, he noted, under the guidance of Turkey, that is responsible and accountable.
The President has written directly to Antonio Guterres in protest over the illegal detention of Cypriot citizens, with the foreign minister taking over representations to all EU institutions, other officials and his counterparts.
