On the occasion of World Lighthouse Day, the municipality of Tinos is taking the initiative to save and protect the historic Livada Lighthouse (AEF 8140), an emblematic monument of the island’s maritime and cultural heritage.
The mayor of Tinos, Panagiotis Krontiras, put the issue at the top of the agenda, in collaboration with the Friends of Livada Lighthouse Group, the Municipal Community of Steni and the local community. An official letter has already been sent to the Hellenic Navy Lighthouse Service, with the Municipality’s commitment to support every action for the study, repair and maintenance of the monument.
Mr. Krontiras stressed that “saving the Livada Lighthouse is a moral obligation towards our history”, underlining that the municipality will lead the coordination of actions, with the aim of immediately starting the work. In the same vein, he announced that similar interventions will be promoted for the other lighthouses of Tinos — the Dysvatos Lighthouse in Stenos and the Planitis Lighthouse in Panormos.
The Livada Lighthouse is not only crucial for navigation safety but also a symbol of identity for the people of Tinos, with its abandonment causing strong concern. The issue was even raised by the Mayor in his recent meeting with the political and military leadership of the Ministry of National Defense, during their visit to the island for the celebration of the Great Feast.
The municipality of Tinos is committed to acting as the central coordinator of the effort, to transparently inform the local community and to cooperate closely with the competent bodies for the protection and promotion of all the lighthouses of the island.
