Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis participated in the videoconference of EU leaders convened by European Council President Antonio Costa, as well as in the videoconference of European People’s Party leaders.
During the teleconferences, updates and assessments were provided on yesterday’s meetings on Ukraine in Washington.
The Prime Minister stressed that it is positive that after yesterday’s meetings there is visibility for the next steps and for a meeting soon between the President of Ukraine and the President of Russia.
He also underlined the need for an immediate ceasefire and expressed his satisfaction with the United States’ intention to support security guarantees.
Kyriakos Mitsotakis reiterated Greece’s consistent position on the inviolability of borders.
Costa: We must accelerate measures for Ukraine’s security
In his remarks, European Council President Antonio Costa spoke about Ukraine’s security.
“Now is the time to accelerate our practical actions towards establishing a guarantee similar to NATO’s Article 5, with the continued involvement of the United States,” Costa said. However, he added that Ukraine’s military must constitute the “first line of defense.”
Costa emphasized that the main security guarantee—a central topic since Donald Trump’s talks with Vladimir Putin on Friday—must be the existence of armed forces capable of defending Ukraine’s sovereignty. He also referred to the need to advance trilateral talks—between Trump, Putin, and Volodymyr Zelensky—as well as Ukraine’s EU accession.
For her part, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen referred to today’s European Council proceedings, stressing that leaders are discussing the progress made in joint efforts to promote peace in Ukraine.
As she noted, in Washington, discussions advanced on strong security guarantees for Ukraine, ending the bloodshed, sanctions, and the return of abducted children. “Close cooperation and our work continue,” von der Leyen said, underlining that the partners’ close collaboration is ongoing.
