Swiss publication: Wonderful, but very expensive “Greek summer”

“Greeks say goodbye to the beaches” is the title of the Swiss newspaper Neue Zürcher Zeitung (NZZ) referring to the increased tourist traffic of the summer, but also to the continuous rise in prices. As the publication points out, “traditionally in Greece most people go on vacation in August. Until recently they went almost exclusively to a beach, either on the islands or on the mainland. Today, however, most locals can no longer afford the cost of a vacation in a popular travel destination.”
This is especially true for the Cyclades, as “the transfer from the mainland alone costs over 400 euros for a family of four by car. For many, this is impossible, when the average salary in Greece is around 1,300”.
Is Croatia an alternative?
The Zurich newspaper reports that “as holidays in Greece have now become more expensive than in neighboring countries due to increased (international) demand, but also due to the general punctuality, many Greeks are taking their first vacation abroad. While a five-day stay for two people in September costs an average of 450 euros in Paros and 370 euros in Santorini, the Dalmatian coast of Croatia is more economical. There, a couple pays around 300 euros for five nights”.
The publication estimates that the Greeks themselves have changed their mentality, as in the past “many were convinced that there was no need to leave their country, where they already had the most beautiful beaches, the cleanest sea, the brightest sun.
