In Vienna, at the conference “From Climate Crisis to Climate Resilience in Europe at Local and Regional Levels” organized by the Pontifical Academies of Sciences and Social Sciences of the Vatican with the participation of European institutional partners, Greece had an active presence through the intervention of the Regional Governor of the South Aegean, Giorgos Hadjimarkos.
Mr. Hadjimarkos spoke about the struggle of the islands against the climate crisis, emphasizing that for island societies the issue is not a theoretical debate, but a daily reality that directly affects the lives of the inhabitants.
He presented initiatives such as “Rhodes Co-Lab”, “Tilos – Just Go Zero” and “Gr-Eco Islands – Chalki”, characterizing them as “shining examples” that show the way of innovation and boldness in the face of the challenges of the time. “Our islands can become laboratories of solutions, where resilience is not only infrastructure, but also social participation, cooperation and consistency in the plan”, he emphasized.
The Regional Governor also highlighted the importance of small islands, such as Tilos and Chalki, which with measurable results manage to prove that even small communities can produce big changes and inspire Europe to move more decisively.
In any case, the participation of the South Aegean in an international conference of the prestige of the Vatican strengthens the footprint of the Greek islands in the global dialogue on climate resilience, while giving recognition to local communities that are leading the transition towards a more sustainable future.
