The Minister of Tourism, Olga Kefalogiannis, was visited by the Ambassador of the United Kingdom to Greece, Matthew Lodge, the Consul General in Thessaloniki, Alexandra Gregory, as well as officials from the Embassy and Consulate, with the aim of assessing the course and prospects of tourism relations between Greece and Britain.
Ms. Kefalogianni presented the strategic orientation of the national tourism policy, which focuses on sustainable development, the diffusion of tourist flows throughout the territory and the extension of the tourist season. As she pointed out, the data so far confirm positive results, with an increase in both inbound tourism and receipts, especially from the British market.
The British Ambassador highlighted the impressive increase in the number of British visitors, which exceeded 5 million last year, characterizing tourism, along with shipping and education, as key pillars of Greek-British relations. At the same time, he highlighted areas with potential for further cooperation, such as the smooth implementation of the European ETIAS system, the strengthening of health infrastructure in smaller destinations, the optimal management of water resources in accommodation and road safety.
The Minister underlined the importance of social sustainability in tourism, with an emphasis on the development of local communities and respect for the environment. She also referred to the new hotel classification system based on environmental and social criteria, which is being developed in collaboration with the Hellenic Chamber of Hotels and the Technical Chamber.
The two sides agreed to expedite the completion of the Memorandum of Tourism Cooperation, so that it can be signed at ministerial level within the year.
