Iconic swimmer Narita, winner of 15 Paralympic gold medals, dies at 55

TOKYO (Kyodo) — Mayumi Narita, the winner of 15 Paralympic swimming gold medals, nicknamed “The Queen of Water,” died of intrahepatic bile duct cancer on Friday. She was 55.
The Kanagawa Prefecture native won a total of 20 medals in six Paralympics despite only starting to swim at 23, having used a wheelchair since she was a junior high school student due to paralysis in her lower body.
After winning two golds in her games debut in Atlanta in 1996, Narita won six golds in Sydney in 2000 and seven in Athens in 2004.
Narita made her last Paralympics appearance in Tokyo in 2021 aged 51.
