The Municipality of Athens is proceeding with new sealings of stores of health interest, as Municipal Police units intensify checks to identify illegal benches with the aim of restoring the functionality of public space and ensuring accessibility. Specifically, from September 5 to 19, 38 temporary sealings of stores (K.Y.E) will be carried out due to exceeding the use of shared space or using shared space without a permit.
The Mayor of Athens, Haris Doukas, stressed: “Where there are illegal benches, a lock will be placed. We are not blackmailed, we are not afraid, we do not back down. The law will be applied without exceptions and without loopholes. Sealings do not constitute punishment, but the delivery of justice for society. We support the vast majority of professionals who respect the regulations and want a functional and fair city. We will not allow a few to encroach on public space to the detriment of citizens and healthy entrepreneurship.”
Of the 38 stores that will be sealed in the coming days, 33 are located in the 1st Municipal Community, 3 in the 2nd Municipal Community and 2 in the 3rd Municipal Community. Since the beginning of the year, it has been decided to seal another 64 stores. In total, 102 seals have been signed.
The Deputy Mayor of Municipal Police and Public Spaces, Thomas Georgiadis, stressed: “The observance of legality in public space is non-negotiable. The Municipality of Athens, implementing the law, is proceeding with the sealing of stores that violated their operating conditions, arbitrarily occupying public spaces with illegal tables and chairs. The controls will continue with consistency and determination.
The Municipality of Athens continues at an unabated pace the operations of control and imposition of sanctions for the arbitrary use of public spaces, within the framework of the implementation of the new regulatory decision and the policy of recovering public space for the benefit of citizens.
