The Municipality of Hersonissos will collaborate with the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens for the implementation of the research project concerning the implementation of a Roadmap for reducing the risk of natural hazards in a period of evolving climate crisis in Hersonissos.
The aim of the proposed Roadmap is to avoid human losses and reduce the impacts at a social, economic and environmental level in the specific area of the Municipality of Hersonissos, safeguarding development with interventions in dynamic sectors and activities.
The National and Kapodistrian University of Athens has so far developed Applied Research Programs in many critical areas with particular geological, geotectonic and seismotectonic regimes in many areas in Greece. Its research team has participated in the management of all the major natural disasters that have occurred in recent years in Greece and internationally, which makes the experience of its members in the analysis of natural hazards top-notch and unique. In addition, it has carried out a multitude of corresponding studies and has accumulated unique, specialized and exclusive know-how, which is constantly evolving and has the ability to parameterize it based on the special characteristics of the Municipality of Hersonissos.
The special geomorphological characteristics of the Municipality of Hersonissos make research in the Municipality important and with added value. At the same time, changes in the population of residents and visitors to the Municipality are of particular scientific interest related to the implementation of prevention actions in areas with a large number of visitors. The project will contribute to the further development of Hersonissos through the safety and protection of residents and tourists. Thus, the image of the Municipality as a safe destination is ensured, thus strengthening tourist flows and the economy. In addition, the island’s resilience in natural risk management issues is increased, through the improvement of prevention measures. Natural disaster risk reduction projects constitute a crucial factor in ensuring a safe, resilient and developmentally sustainable future for island municipalities. In summary, the general civil protection plans will be updated and optimized, research on seismic risk and the risk of earthquake-related phenomena, research on flood risk and the risk of flood-related phenomena and research on fire risk and the risk of post-fire phenomena will be carried out. In this context, specialized operational plans will be prepared for the Municipality of Hersonissos in the event of a disaster caused by an earthquake and the triggering of a tsunami, flood and fire. Particular emphasis will be given to the geodynamic, seismotectonic, geomorphological, hydrometeorological and urban features of the Municipality of Hersonissos as well as to the Municipality’s needs in means, capacity and infrastructure for Civil Protection. Particular emphasis will be given to the management of the large number of tourists visiting the area.
