Nikos Michaloliakos, former leader of the Greek neo-Nazi Golden Dawn party, has been released from prison by decision of the Lamia judicial council despite his conviction to 13 years’ imprisonment.
According to Greek media, the release was granted for health reasons and is accompanied by house arrest and the imposition of restrictive conditions.
This development occurs more than one year after Michaloliakos’s return to prison, following the annulment of his first release decision.
The former Golden Dawn leader was originally convicted as part of the landmark trial that saw the far-right party classified as a criminal organisation. The court had sentenced multiple Golden Dawn members for their roles in the organisation’s activities.
His initial release had been overturned, leading to his return to custody before this latest health-based release decision by the judicial council.
