Turkey’s basketball federation removes provocative social media post

The Turkish basketball federation has taken down a social media post it made after its victory against Greece in the EuroBasket semi-final, following an intervention by the Hellenic Basketball Federation (EOK).
Even if a little late, the Turkish federation realised its mistake and withdrew what was an undeniably provocative post that went beyond the boundaries of sportsmanship. On their social media, after the win against Greece in the EuroBasket semi-final, a photo was uploaded showing Cedi Osman dunking and Giannis Antetokounmpo praying, in two completely different moments, with the caption: “No Mercy.”
The EOK reacted with an official protest to the Turkish federation about the post, and the Turks apologised. They gave the order for the post to be taken down, claiming it was made without their knowledge and approval.
It is noted that a post by Alperen Şengün, featuring Kemal Atatürk and a song with the lyric “Did the sea air bother you?”, has also caused an uproar. This is interpreted as a reference to the well-known Turkish saying “we threw you into the sea.” The Rockets superstar has not removed his post, but he has disabled the comments.
