The delivery of the advanced Israeli Barak MX air defence system poses an immediate threat to Turkey’s national security and that of the “TRNC”, claimed Republican People’s Party (CHP) deputy leader Yanki Bagcioglu following claims that Nicosia acquired the system.
In a written statement, Bagcioglu argued that the system’s delivery to Limassol port “constitutes a clear violation of international law and an immediate threat to the national security of Turkey and the TRNC”.

The Barak MX system, which provides 360-degree coverage and can neutralise aircraft, drones and missiles, “constitutes a much more advanced system than the Russian S-300s that had not ended up in Cyprus in 1997 due to Turkey’s decisive stance,” he stated.
Bagcioglu argued that the new weapons system could be installed in Paphos, enabling monitoring of aerial activity through its 3D multifunctional radar as far as the Aksaz-Alexandretta region in Turkey.

He further warned that through its network structure, the system could connect with Israel, transmitting critical data about the Eastern Mediterranean.
The CHP deputy leader noted that the Barak MX would enhance the Republic of Cyprus’s existing Tor-M1 and Buk M1-2 systems, “transforming the island into an advanced defensive base with support from Israel, the USA and France”.
Finally, he called on Ankara “to wage a decisive diplomatic struggle against the Greek Cypriot fait accompli actions and clearly demonstrate its deterrence” in order to “safeguard peace and stability in the Eastern Mediterranean”.
