The assessment that 2025 will be a milestone year for Greek tourism, with arrivals exceeding 36 million visitors, was expressed to ERT by the Vice President of the Athens Chamber of Commerce and the Athens Chamber of Commerce, Mr. Nikos Koyumtsis.
According to him, September recorded a better course than the summer months, as autumn tourists —mainly from the USA, Canada and Australia— have stronger purchasing power. At the same time, the extension of the tourist season in Athens and other destinations creates significant benefits for the local market and businesses.
However, Mr. Koyyoumtsis highlighted a serious problem that affects both Greek entrepreneurship and tourism-related trade: unfair competition from Asian electronic platforms. As he stressed, parcels worth up to 150 euros are imported without VAT and taxation, which affects European businesses and raises security issues, as many products do not meet European standards or are counterfeit.
The E.E.A. has proposed imposing a fee of 7 euros per parcel from third countries, calling for “equal treatment” and ensuring fair competition conditions. A memorandum has already been sent to the relevant ministries and the European Union, although the first measures are expected after 2028.
In 2024 alone, 4.6 billion parcels from Asian platforms arrived in Europe, with 80,000 daily heading to Greece. “The issue is not only financial, but also a matter of control and consumer protection,” noted the Vice President of the E.E.A.
