A Harvard boffin has issued an “immediate attention” warning to Congress and the United Nations, believing that there’s a strong possibility it’s a hostile alien visitor pretending to be a comet
A mysterious object whizzing through our solar system is just two weeks from revealing its true identity. And a Harvard boffin has warned that it could be a malicious alien spaceship disguised as a comet.
Astronomy professor Avi Loeb said there is a 30-40% chance the object, called 3I/ATLAS, is not natural in origin but actually built by hostile aliens looking to harm us.
Such a spacecraft is called a “Trojan Horse”, where it strategically masquerades as a harmless item to hide its true nature, like the giant wooden horse in ancient Greek mythology.
The object, currently passing Mars, has attracted great curiosity among space enthusiasts speculating whether it’s an alien invasion or a simple rock.
Originating in another solar system, it likely formed seven and a half billion years ago before it began its journey across the Milky Way, which is why professor Brian Cox suggested it could be a “message from the past”.
A new NASA study has even detected water spilling from the comet. It’s thought to be an “interstellar” space rock. It would be the third interstellar object to ever have been identified, after Oumuamua in 2017 and Borisov in 2019.
A comet is a celestial object made of ice and dust. In his blogpost, Loeb points out how where are “no protocols for responding to the discovery of functioning alien devices near Earth”.
Governments’ lack of emergency preparation for interactions with aliens is a problem, he explains. Loeb wrote: “A visitor in our backyard requires immediate attention because it could enter through the front door and pose an imminent threat.”
He suggests that the world does a full survey of the sky to scan it for existential threat – and adds that even if no threats are found, it would still be useful to science. He wrote: “It is a win-win investment that makes a lot of sense.”
Loeb has been studying the object since its discovery by a space telescope in Chile in July. He has noticed several anomalies which suggest it might have have technology built into it.
He says it should “disintegrate into fragments” as it nears the sun on October 29 if it truly is a mere comet. However, the mysterious interstellar object has been spotted shedding metals in a way that defies the rules of a comet.
But other scientists say that while Loeb’s ideas are fun to think about, they are feeding conspiracy theorists.
