Athens continues to write its own history on the international fine drinking scene. In this year’s list of the World’s 50 Best Bars 2025, three Greek bars stood out among the world’s top, and not by chance. From the circular philosophy of Line, to the timeless glamour of Baba au Rum and the unconventional freshness of The Bar in Front of the Bar, the Greek capital shows that it has a culture with depth, identity and consistency.
Line – No. 8
Line, at the intersection of Kypseli and Metaxourgeio, remains the most experimental bar in the city and one of the most talked about projects internationally. With a circular economy philosophy, in-house fermentations (fruit wines, sour beers, sourdough), and a farm-to-glass approach, Line doesn’t just make drinks, it also produces the raw materials for them. The team transforms by-products into creative ingredients, while cocktails like the Delusional Margarita (reposado tequila with savory touches) redefine classics. Its No. 8 position comes as a natural continuation of a steady upward trajectory (No. 12 in 2023, No. 6 in 2024), confirming that the Athenian bar can stand on the same level as the most advanced concepts in London or Copenhagen.
Baba au Rum – No. 27
Baba au Rum needs no introduction. For more than 15 years, it has been a reference point for the international bartender community, with one of the most complete rum collections in the world (400+ labels) and a bar that has created a “school”. This year, in addition to its presence on the list (No. 27), it also received the special Rémy Martin Legend of the List 2025 award, for its timeless influence and consistency.
Its signature style remains creative and adventurous: cocktails like the Beatnik Paloma prove that tradition and innovation can coexist in the same glass.
The Bar in Front of the Bar – No. 47 (New entrance)
Among the narrow streets of Petraki, The Bar in Front of the Bar proved that size does not matter. With zero internal capacity, humorous illuminated signs and an absolute zero-waste philosophy, the tiny street bar has entered the Top-50 for the first time (from the extended 51–100 of 2024). Every day it proposes eight signature drinks made exclusively from “leftovers” of preparation, as a timely act of sustainability. Its entry into the list shows that the Athenian scene remains open to new ideas, humor and environmental awareness.
Greek fine drinking
This year’s presence of three Athenian bars in the World’s 50 Best Bars 2025 list maps a city that now participates equally in the international discussion on taste, sustainability and design. From fermentation and reuse to specialization and experimentation, Athens now has a range of techniques, styles and identities.
Beyond prestige, such distinctions also enhance experiential tourism, with travelers from all over the world now coming to Athens not only for its restaurants, but also for the fine drinking that flourishes in every corner.
Last but not least, Barro Negro Athens confirmed its place on the international map of fine drinking, taking No. 62 in this year’s list of The World’s 50 Best Bars (extended 51–100). The brainchild of George Kavaklis and Stelios Papadopoulos, the bar on Ioannou Paparrigopoulou Street has become synonymous with tequila and mezcal in Athens, honoring the tradition of Mexico with respect, technique and creativity.
