A new bridge of friendship and cooperation between Chios and China began to take shape with the visit of a seven-member delegation from Weifang City, Shandong Province, led by Deputy Mayor Zhou Jun, to Chios Town Hall.
The discussions focused on the prospects for developing synergies in the fields of tourism, cultural exchange and the promotion of local products, while the possibility of twinning the two cities was also examined, as a step to strengthen the bonds of friendship between Greece and China.
Weifang is internationally known as the “Kite Capital” and has been recognized by UNESCO as a “Creative City of Arts and Folk Art”, thanks to its long-standing tradition in crafts and artistic expression. It stands out for its Chinese New Year painting, paper cutting and peach pit carving, combining tradition and innovation.
The Chinese delegation, accompanied by the Deputy Mayor of Tourism, George Christakis, visited the Castle of Chios, the Maritime Museum, the Mastic Museum and the medieval villages of the island, getting to know the cultural and natural wealth of the place firsthand.
This initiative is part of a broader extroversion strategy of the Municipality of Chios, which aims to form international partnerships and to promote the island as a cultural and tourist hub in the Aegean.
