Police confirmed that two people have died and six others have been left injured after a mass shooting broke out on a popular holiday island. Officials noted that those still alive are receiving hospital treatment
A mass shooting has left two people dead and at least six others with injuries on Saturday (November 1).
The horror violence occurred on the popular Greek island of Crete, with the shooting erupting just after 11am. Officials have confirmed that the shooting stemmed from a longstanding family dispute in the quaint village of Vorizia.
The settlement lies 32 miles south of Heraklion, the island’s principal city. The victims, a 39-year-old man and a 56-year-old woman, died during the shooting, police verified in an official statement.
Six additional people were transported to nearby hospitals with injuries of differing severity, local emergency services EKAB announced.
Two wounded men continue to receive treatment in hospital and remain “under guard, and their participation in the armed incident is under investigation,” police stated.
The firefight prompted an extensive deployment of security personnel and emergency crews to the remote mountain settlement, where authorities have initiated a preliminary inquiry, reports the Mirror.
The incident appears to represent the most recent development in a bitter conflict between two local families, according to regional media reports, and comes after an explosion on Friday evening at a property under construction. Nobody suffered harm in the blast.
Greek public broadcaster ERT reported that the two families had previously clashed over grazing rights, which were resolved through private arbitration, a standard approach in Crete’s rural communities. The feud reignited last year when a member of one clan acquired land to construct a residence in territory controlled by the other, local news sources indicated.
The house that was the scene of Friday’s explosion was reportedly constructed on this disputed plot.
Elsewhere, UK police confirmed nine arrests after a major city turned into a “warzone” over yobs setting off fireworks that were aimed at officers, bus passengers and passers by.
Police have confirmed that nine people were arrested after consecutive incidents that shook the busy city of Birmingham late last night (October 31).
The second-largest city in the UK was rocked by the yobs starting from around 9pm, which saw dozens of fireworks lit and fired off one after the other.
In footage of the shocking incident, a double decker bus full of passengers can be seen as a sitting duck as multiple hooded figures aimed the rockets at the vehicle.
Another clip captures the moment that a group dressed in black with their faces obscured by masks and hoods fired rockets at people walking on the other side of the road. The chilling video shows that those aiming the fireworks were filming on their phones while targeting pedestrians.
