The countdown is well and truly on for the kick off of the 2026 VPL1 and VPL2 seasons. With seven clubs from the Greek community set to battle it out across these leagues, the punters in Melbourne’s Greek hubs are buzzing for a campaign packed with grit, glory, and the dream of climbing back to the top tier of Victorian footy.
In VPL1, we’ve got the lads from Iraklis in Northcote, Leonidas from Brunswick, and of course, Nea Hellas out of Port Melbourne.
The first two outfits bring bags of experience from VPL1. They know the opposition inside out, they’ve played on every pitch going, and they’ll charge into the new term with big ambitions and a burning hunger for promotion to the NPL.
But we can’t say the same for the Port Melbourne mob. The 2025 campaign was a proper nightmare for Nea Hellas. They struggled to find their feet, never really hit their stride, and it all led to them getting dragged into the drop zone and ultimately relegated to VPL1.
It’s anyone’s guess what sort of show the “Sharks” will put on in this league that’s all new to them, but the fixture draw, unveiled just days ago, has served up some absolute crackers.
The fresh season launches with a civil derby that’ll have hearts racing and stir up the footy fans across the community.
On Friday, 13 February, the curtain raiser is a stonking showdown. Leonidas will host Iraklis in a clash dripping with history. Nea Hellas get their quest underway the next day, heading to Brunswick Juventus’s ground for a proper scrap.
From the rest of the opening round’s ties, the duel between Manningham United and Bulleen Lions also stands out as a belter.

VPL2
Four clubs with Greek flavour will line up in VPL2 this year.
The old guard Box Hill United, plus the three newcomers. Clarinda, who dropped down from VPL1, along with Malvern City and Bayside Argonauts, the pair that earned promotion from the State Leagues.
It’s an all Greek derby to launch VPL2 as well.
On Saturday, 14 February, Malvern City will welcome Bayside Argonauts in a historic match up that’s bound to pull in heaps of local footy lovers.
It’s a rivalry packed with memories, one that reminds everyone of the massive role the beautiful game plays in our community.
Box Hill United, the league’s veterans, kick off against the always tricky Springvale White Eagles.
Pythagoras is gearing up for a season where they’ll fight tooth and nail for promotion to VPL1. Let’s see if they can pull it off.
The action for our sides wraps up with the debutants Clarinda in the mix. Kingston City launch their adventure away at Werribee City’s den.
