Flight frequency puts Cyprus at top for Israeli air travel

Increased flights have been recorded regarding passenger departures from Israel to Cyprus this year. According to official data released by the Israel Airports Authority (IAA), Cyprus shares the fourth position with Italy in total passenger traffic but holds the global lead in the number of weekly flights from Israeli airports.
In terms of passenger volume, Greece remains in first place by a large margin with 2.2 million passengers. The US follows with 1.6 million, the United Arab Emirates with 1.5 million, and then Italy and Cyprus, which both recorded 1.2 million passengers on flights departing from Israel.
Cyprus has the highest number of weekly flights globally from Israeli airports (Tel Aviv and Haifa), specifically up to 186 flights per week.
The Fragility of a Key Market
Despite the impressive figures—with Israel holding its position as the second-largest tourism market and ranking first in high-value daily per capita visitor spending—this dependence exposes a significant vulnerability for Cyprus.
While the market’s propensity for shorter, year-round trips provides crucial flow outside the traditional summer season, the potential for continued expansion is tenuous. The island recorded a remarkable increase of 42.6% in arrivals from Israel this year, yet experts and Israeli media underscore that future growth is highly conditional.
The Cypriot tourism sector’s reliance on this influx remains hostage to external factors. Specifically, the ability to benefit further is determined not by domestic strategy, but by the unpredictable variables of regional stability, global flight availability, and a wider set of geopolitical dynamics. This leaves the island’s economic gains fundamentally exposed to volatility in the broader Middle East.
