Woman dies in Greece migrant boat sinking

A 22-year-old woman was found dead on Monday off the Greek Aegean island of Samos after a boat carrying more than 40 migrants sank, the coastguard said.
Another three people on board are missing according to survivors, the coastguard said.
No information about the migrants’ nationalities or the circumstances of the sinking was immediately available.
Last Thursday, a minor was reported missing off the island of Farmakonissi, near Samos, after police found 13 migrants shipwrecked but alive in the area.
Samos and Farmakonissi lie close to Turkey’s western coast, a frequent setoff point for people seeking asylum.
Many migrants attempt not only to cross from Turkey to nearby Greek islands but also the much longer route between Libya and Crete, in southern Greece.
Last week, more than 840 migrants and refugees were rescued south of Crete.
In early December, 17 people were found dead after their boat sank off Crete and 15 others were reported missing. Only two people survived.
The UN refugee agency (UNHCR) last month said more than 1,700 people had died or were missing this year on migration routes to Europe in the Mediterranean and the Atlantic.
According to the International Organisation for Migration (IOM), about 33,000 migrants have died or gone missing in the Mediterranean since 2014.
