The need to strengthen the country’s infrastructure in order to make it more friendly to tourists was underlined by the Secretary General of the Hellenic Tourism Organization, Andreas Fiorentinos, speaking at the 7th Regional Conference organized by the Panhellenic Hoteliers’ Federation (POX), in Mytilene, on the topic: “Tourism development in the North Aegean: infrastructure, strategic challenges and prospects”.
“We must agree that while we are by far the best in hospitality, we lag behind in infrastructure, roads and water management. In order to improve this situation, investments of 380 million euros are being launched to modernize infrastructure, so that the entire country is more tourist-friendly. At the same time, we are strengthening tourism education, estimating that its upgrade will bring positive results that will be visible in the future,” Andreas Fiorentinos characteristically emphasized.
Referring to the challenges facing the sector, the Secretary General of the Greek National Tourism Organization (GNTO), pointed out that “sustainable tourism, the upgrade of the tourism product, as well as the strengthening of resilience, do not concern only the North Aegean but the entire country.” The Greek National Tourist Organization, which, as he recalled, has been responsible for promoting the country since 2012, is highlighting Greece’s comparative advantages in its effort to attract tourism.
“The Greek National Tourist Organization has a unique network with 17 offices in all markets around the world, a pool of approximately 300 million tourists within 1-3 hours of Greece, whom we need to reach. We are trying to highlight more destinations, beyond the sun-sea model, we are enriching the “Greece” brand beyond what we already knew,” he pointed out.
At the conference panel, which was attended by the President of the Panhellenic Hoteliers Federation, Mr. Yiannis Hatzis, and coordinated by the journalist of the newspapers NEA and VIMA, Mr. Costas Delezos, the Secretary General of the Greek National Tourist Organization, highlighted the special importance of the North Aegean region, expressing his optimism that with the contribution of the Greek National Tourist Organization it can be upgraded as a tourist destination. “I am optimistic, there is awareness, the islanders do not need to leave their place and they have understood it,” he concluded.
