A Greek tombstone has been discovered in Libya’s Shahat following severe floods caused by Storm Daniel, the Libyan Antiquities Authority has confirmed.
The limestone artifact was unearthed in the northern cemetery area of Shahat—ancient Cyrene—after torrents exposed several archaeological finds in the region. The discovery highlights the city’s rich Greek heritage, as Cyrene was a major Hellenistic center founded in the 7th century BC.
Authorities launched an excavation and rescue operation after images of the tombstone circulated online. The artifact has since been recovered, with ongoing efforts to study the site further.
The Antiquities Authority has urged citizens to report discoveries through official channels to preserve Libya’s archaeological heritage.
