Ange Kenos, one of Victoria’s most dedicated blood donors, has recently been honoured by the Australian Red Cross for his contribution of over 750 blood donations—a life-saving effort that has helped nearly 2,000 people over the past 50 years.
Kenos’s journey began at 18 when, as a student at Melbourne University, he spotted a Red Cross mobile unit on campus. Attracted by the promise of what he jokingly calls “the best ice tea in the galaxy,” he made his first donation without realising the profound impact it would have on his life and others.
As Kenos continued donating, the importance of his commitment became deeply personal. He recalls knowing friends and doctors in dire need of blood. One particularly emotional moment came when his uncle’s sister-in-law required three blood transfusions. When Kenos’s uncle saw the donor band on his wrist, he embraced Kenos for the first time, both men overcome with emotion and gratitude.
Despite the critical need for blood, only three percent of Australians donate each year, even though one in three will require blood or blood products at some point in their lives.
The Red Cross reports that one in three Australians will need blood or blood products in their lifetime, but only one in 30 Australians donate blood every year.
Kenos is particularly concerned about the low participation rate among Greek Australians, a group with a higher-than-average need for blood due to the prevalence of thalassemia, a blood disorder common in Mediterranean populations.
“It saddens me deeply that while our ethnic community has a higher need for blood, we donate far below the already low national average,” says Kenos.
For Kenos, each donation is a rewarding experience.
“It’s like a mini medical check-up, no fuss. You give blood, enjoy some refreshments, and most importantly, leave knowing you’ve potentially saved a life—a child, a new mother, someone in an accident.”
