This morning, at Tatterson Pavilion in Greater Dandenong, Attorney-General Mark Dreyfus attended the launch of a new children’s storybook, ‘My Superhero Voice’ aimed at helping adults from diverse cultural backgrounds have conversations with children about preventing child sexual abuse. Dreyfus the member of Issacs represents some of the most culturally diverse suburbs of Australia in the south-eastern Melbourne.
The launch event was attended by community members and ethnic media representatives from highlighting the importance of engaging Australia’s diverse communities. Along with the representatives there were children actively involved in the launch and diverse performances
My Superhero Voice was developed by Cultural Perspectives in partnership with the National Office for Child Safety, and, has been translated into 10 languages.
It provides culturally and linguistically diverse communities in Australia with “a safe and inclusive way to teach children about personal safety” said the producers.
Greek is not one of the languages included in the initial release, however, Neos Kosmos understands that there is pressure on the National Office for Child Safety to produce the resource in Greek as well. The English edition of My Superhero Voice is seen as an ideal tool for Greek Australian adults and educators.
A spokesperson for the initiative explained that English was chosen as the preferred language for the storybook, stating, “This is the preferred language for most young Greek parents when discussing this matter with their children under the age of five.”
The campaign One Talk at a Time, is a first for Australia aimed at preventing child sexual abuse, and comes with a hefty budget of $22.4 million. The campaign targets adults who play active roles in the lives of children and encourages ongoing, proactive conversations to prevent child sexual abuse.
A free e-book version of the storybook, as well as additional resources for adults to learn more about child sexual abuse and how to have preventive conversations, is available at www.childsafety.gov.au/one-talk-time
Support is available 24/7 through Lifeline (13 11 14), 1800RESPECT (1800 737 732), or 13YARN (13 92 76) for Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander crisis support. Bravehearts and the Blue Knot Foundation offer support for those affected by child sexual abuse.
