Australian Championship Quarterfinals: Eyes locked on the summit

We’re now only two wins away from the grand final of the Australian Championship – the fresh, bold tournament that’s proper shaken up the sleepy waters of Aussie football.
Eight clubs full of heart, grit and genuine class have made it to the quarterfinals: the mighty Heidelberg United, the Alexander of Australian football, the legendary South Melbourne Hellas, Avondale, NWS Spirit, NE Metrostars, Moreton City Excelsior, APIA Leichhardt and Marconi Stallions all earned their golden ticket in what’s already been an absolute cracker of a comp.
First out of the blocks for the Greek Australian sides will be the yellow and black army from Olympic Village. John Anastasiadis’ boys welcome NE Metrostars this Saturday afternoon, 3.35pm kick off, in a genuine arm wrestle for a place in the final four.

Make no mistake, this won’t be a stroll for the Bergers. Metrostars are a serious outfit, properly structured and hard to break down. They started the tournament on the back foot with back to back defeats, but then found their groove, picking up ten points from the next four to finish runner up in their group behind the red hot APIA Leichhardt.
Come Sunday at 3.05 pm, the blue and white machine of South Melbourne Hellas will host the side that, on paper at least, looks the softest touch of the eight, NWS Spirit. The Sydneysiders limped into the quarters with just eight points and a negative goal difference, conceding nine while scoring only eight.
A switched on, clinical Hellas side should have far too much class and firepower for Spirit and cruise into the semis without breaking sweat.
Here’s hoping both our community giants come through the weekend with the chocolates. Get yourselves to the games, roar on the yellow and black and the blue and white, and enjoy the sort of top shelf football only our Greek Australian clubs consistently serve up.
