Authorities declare war on walled Nicosia migrants

Justice Minister Marios Hartsiotis will hold an inter-agency meeting to tackle “illegal activities” in Nicosia’s walled city, following initial discussions with Mayor Charalambos Prountzos.
The initiative targets two main areas: west of Rigenis Street along Ledra Street, and from the end of Ledra Street eastward to Omeriye Mosque, Hartsiotis told Phileleftheros.
Officials will inspect businesses for proper licensing, including alcohol and music permits, after reports emerged of commercial properties being converted into accommodation. Properties have reportedly been turned into makeshift living spaces by placing curtains in shop windows, with landlords allegedly collecting thousands of euros for unsuitable housing.
The minister cited reports of illegal animal slaughter in basements and unlicensed business operations in areas that have become “ghettoised” by legal and illegal residents.
Following the meeting, authorities will conduct a walking tour of the area to engage with shop owners and residents. Regular checks will be implemented to arrest residents living illegally.
The initiative may extend to other city centres, particularly Limassol, where similar housing violations have been reported, Phileleftheros reported.
According to Phileleftheros, two hotels are set to open in central Nicosia, with development work expected to begin soon. Moreover, the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens plans to establish a campus in Tarsi Arcade on Ledra Street.
The university branch will be built on church-owned land.
