For twelve years, Mycooperativa has been bringing together scientists and nature lovers on a shared journey of knowledge, discovery and love for the magical world of mushrooms.
The team consists of Giorgos Koutrotsios, Agronomist-Mycologist, Assistant Professor at the Agricultural University of Athens, Elias Polemis, Agronomist-Mycologist, Postdoctoral Researcher and Scientific Associate of the Agricultural University of Athens, Vasilis Daskalopoulos, Agronomist-Mycologist, PhD Candidate and Scientific Associate of the Agricultural University of Athens, and Savvas Christodoulou, Agronomist-Mycologist, PhD Candidate and Scientific Associate of the Agricultural University of Athens and Kostis Hourmidis, graphic designer and amateur mushroom picker.
A group of four agronomists-mycologists who met and connected in the laboratories of the Agricultural University of Athens and a fellow traveler, decided to bring knowledge from the amphitheaters and academic research into the forest! Their friendship evolved into a collaboration and the collaboration into a dynamic team that combines scientific validity, experiential learning and a deep love for the field.
This year’s Mycooperativa autumn seminars are held in selected areas of mountainous Greece, where the forest, humidity and the first rains give life to mushrooms.
This year’s route includes Parnassos, Velouchi and the Corinthian Mountains, while depending on the weather conditions and the course of the rains, other destinations will be added – even to islands, where the first autumn rains create ideal conditions for mushrooms in unexpected landscapes.
The seminars include theoretical presentations on the ecology, nutritional and medicinal value of fungi, as well as practical training in the field, with an emphasis on safe species identification.
The goal is not only to recognize, but also to understand the interdependence of these magical creatures with the forest in order to cultivate a more conscious relationship with nature.
