Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots will collaborate on a two-day art project that symbolically transforms Cyprus’ dividing Green Line into a thread of unity, as part of an official parallel event at Larnaca Biennale 2025.
Weaving Unity, scheduled for 25 and 26 October at the Space of Creativity and Culture in central Larnaca, combines a participatory weaving workshop with a public celebration featuring live performances and visual installations. The project aims to foster reconciliation between the island’s divided communities through collaborative artistic expression.
Participants from both communities will gather on 25 October to create a collective artwork under the guidance of Greek Cypriot urban weaving artist Iphigenia Papageorgiou and curator Konstantinos Charilaou. The workshop, running from 10:00 to 17:00, invites individuals aged 18 and above to weave recycled and personal fabrics into a metal fence structure.
“Weaving Unity is not just an event. It is an act of reconciliation, understanding, and reconnection, an invitation to imagine a shared, open future, starting with a single thread,” organisers stated in the project announcement.
The following day, 26 October, the completed artwork will be unveiled during a public celebration from 18:00 to 23:00. The event will feature performances by Turkish Cypriot artist Tahini Molasses, musicians Alejjos, Vanesha, and Nikolas Loizou, and traditional Ney music by Vassilis Philippou.
Visual artists Cyprus Surreal and Charizart will create what organisers describe as the first projection mapping installation on both façades of a historical public building in Larnaca. The multi-sensory celebration aims to create an atmosphere incorporating sound, visual elements, movement, and community engagement.
The final piece will subsequently be exhibited at Zouchouri Square as part of the official Larnaca Biennale 2025 exhibition programme. All workshop participants will receive recognition as co-creators and equal artistic contributors to the work.
The project is curated and produced by Konstantinos Charilaou in collaboration with artists from across Cyprus.
