With a backdrop of tradition, culture and Cretan hospitality, the 2nd Arts and Culture Festival of the Municipality of Hersonissos has come to a close. From the village squares to the historic temples and small theaters of the region, art found its way to the hearts of citizens, confirming that culture is not a luxury—it is a necessity.
The festival included theatrical performances, musical concerts, children’s activities, art exhibitions, celebrations of local products and international collaborations. From the “Dream of Crete” and the “Skirt Blouse” to the musical evenings dedicated to Mikis Theodorakis and Theodoros Antoniou, the audience had the opportunity to enjoy highly aesthetic productions, with a strong local and global character. With the participation of 300 dancers from all over the world, Episkopi and the Port of Hersonissos were transformed into a stage of cultural coexistence, full of color, rhythm and enthusiasm.
A special moment of the festival was the event at the Monastery of Gouverniotissa, where art met spirituality, with the participation of the Symphony Orchestra of the Municipality of Athens, in an evening dedicated to the memory of the internationally renowned composer Theodore Antoniou, with works by him and his students. The uniqueness of the space was highlighted in the context of the action, offering the audience an experience of reflection and aesthetic uplift. The participation was movingly large, with visitors stating that the event “was not just culture, it was memory and future together”.
Thousands of citizens and visitors actively participated in all the events, confirming the need for cultural actions that unite, inspire and entertain. The interaction between the audience and the creators was continuous, lively and substantial. The Municipality of Hersonissos warmly thanks all the contributors, the volunteers, the cultural associations, the artists and of course the audience, who with their presence and energy contributed to the success of the festival. With their eyes on the future, the Municipality is committed to continuing to invest in culture, strengthening the extroversion and the quality of the actions that promote art, tradition and creative expression.
“This festival is not just a series of events. It is proof that culture can be an everyday thing, touch the citizen, be born through cooperation and flourish in every corner of our Municipality,” said the Mayor of Hersonissos, Zacharias Doxastakis, in his statements, adding: “I thank from the bottom of my heart everyone who contributed to its success. We continue with the same faith, the same love for the place and its people.”
