Iosif Kesidis clinched Cyprus’s first-ever gold medal at a European Throwing Cup competition today, breaking his own national under-23 record in the process.
Competing in the men’s under-23 hammer throw at the 24th European Throwing Cup hosted at GSP National Athletics Stadium in Nicosia, Kesidis secured victory with a throw of 72.96 metres on his fourth attempt.
The 22-year-old athlete, coached by Panicos Charalambous, demonstrated remarkable consistency throughout the competition, improving his record with his second throw of 72.50 metres before recording 72.78 metres in his final attempt.
Kesidis’s performance surpassed his previous personal best of 72.23 metres and the national under-23 record of 71.32 metres.
Hungary’s Miklos Cseko claimed silver with a throw of 71.54 metres, while Greece’s Ioannis Korakidis took bronze with 71.08 metres.
The victory adds to Kesidis’s growing international reputation after he won gold at the U20 World Championships in Lima last year.
The young Cypriot athlete now has his sights set on the European U23 Championships and potentially the World Athletics Championships later this year.
