Cypriot foreign affairs minister Konstantinos Kombos met with the Australia’s foreign affairs minister Penny Wong this week as part of the High-Level Week for the 79th General Assembly of the United Nations in New York.
Close ties between Cyprus and Australia were confirmed and the two Ministers also discussed the current developments in the Middle East.
Topics covered included the recent rise of conflict in the Middle East and ongoing initiatives to assist in the evacuation of Australians from impacted regions.
Wong praised Kombos for his role in the safe evacuation of Australian citizens during ongoing regional turmoil.
“Grateful for the opportunity to thank my Cypriot counterpart… for supporting the evacuation of Australians from regional crises,” she said in post on X.
The Cyprus issue was a major focal point during the UN General Assembly.
On Wednesday Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides said he was ready to immediately resume reunification talks and urged Turkey to also engage in the effort.
“We cannot change geography. It is an opportunity, not a curse. Turkey and Cyprus will always remain neighbours,” Christodoulides said in a speech.
“I adamantly believe we can carve a new path, one of peace, cooperation and collaboration.
“I am committed and I am ready to sit at the negotiating table today. Not tomorrow. Today.”
Meanwhile Greece is urging the EU to provide medical treatment to injured Lebanese citizens, according to the Greek foreign ministry.
The foreign minister George Gerapetritis told Lebanese foreign minister Abdallah Bou Habib that Greece was concerned about the Middle East crisis and the risk of its further expansion, the Greek ministry said in a statement on Wednesday.
“It is absolutely necessary to stop the vicious cycle of violence and confrontation,” it said.
