Nicosia has responded quickly and positively to Israel’s request for assistance with devastating fires around Jerusalem, which at one point had threatened the historic city.
According to an announcement from the Ministry of Justice and Public Order, the police helicopter “Akritas” took off at 11:00 this morning with its crew and arrived in Israel at noon, already taking part in operations to extinguish the wildfires.
Earlier, a government source told philenews that “Cyprus responded positively to a request from Israel to send aerial assets.”
The same source said that a helicopter and ground forces were made available to assist in firefighting efforts in the neighbouring country.
Kombos Communication with Saar
Last night, Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar, spoke with his Cypriot counterpart, Constantinos Kombos, discussing the possibility of Cypriot assistance.
In a post on the ‘X’ platform (formerly Twitter), Saar wrote that “Over the past few hours, I had a series of telephone conversations with my counterparts from Argentina, France, Britain, Spain, Portugal, the Czech Republic, Sweden, Croatia, Greece, Cyprus, Azerbaijan, and North Macedonia, to request assistance in dealing with the devastating fires near Jerusalem.”
Saar expressed his gratitude to these countries, as all of them stood ready to contribute and help Israel, which was fortunate to have true friends who stand by it in times of need.
