A military parade marking Cyprus’ Independence Day concluded on Tuesday afternoon on Iosif Hadjiosif Avenue in Nicosia. The event, held in celebration of the October 1st anniversary of Cyprus’ declaration of independence, was attended by the country’s political, religious, and military leadership, including the President of the Hellenic Republic, foreign ambassadors, and military attachés.
Crowds gathered hours before the parade’s official start at 11 a.m., which was preceded by a 21-gun salute and a flag-raising ceremony, accompanied by the national anthem. President of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulides, and the President of Greece, Katerina Sakellaropoulou, presided over the parade, joined by Cypriot Defence Minister Vasilis Palmas, Greek Deputy Defence Minister Ioannis Kefalogiannis, and the Chief of the National Guard, Lieutenant General Georgios Tsitsikostas.
The parade opened with a flyover by National Guard helicopters, including aircraft from the United Kingdom. Units from the National Guard, Police, Fire Brigade, Search and Rescue Coordination Centre, Forestry Department, Civil Defence, and Ambulance Service participated. War veterans from the 1974 conflict, alongside Red Cross volunteers, also took part, alongside former prisoners of war.
The event was widely praised for its organisation and the impressive display of the participating security forces.
