Cyprus is experiencing increased hotel bookings for the Easter period due to the coincidence of Orthodox, Catholic and Jewish holidays this year, the Cyprus Hotels Association (PASYXE) reported on Monday.
“We’re seeing heightened booking activity in recent weeks, with strong demand extending until April 25,” said Christos Angelides, Director General of PASYXE.
Paphos currently leads with 70-80% occupancy rates, while the Famagusta region reports 60-70% and Larnaca slightly above 70%, benefiting from airport proximity and growing interest in the city itself.
The United Kingdom, Poland, Germany, Israel and Scandinavian countries remain Cyprus’s primary tourism markets, representing approximately 60-70% of total visitors.
Looking ahead to summer, Angelides noted that advance bookings currently account for only 6-7% of the season total, with the association maintaining a cautious outlook due to ongoing trade tensions that could affect consumer spending in key source markets.
Regarding water conservation efforts, Angelides addressed the hotel sector’s push to install desalination units before the end of the current season despite technical challenges.
“We hope hotels can secure desalination units by September or October. There’s strong interest from hoteliers, but difficulty in sourcing the units as they require 6-8 weeks for manufacturing, with orders coming from countries like Israel, France and Greece,” he explained.
PASYXE expects to have a clearer picture of the tourism season within two weeks, once the impact of trade wars on national economies and disposable income in key source markets becomes more apparent.
