Cypriot footballers file more appeals against their clubs than players in any other EU country, it was revealed at the FifPro legal conference in the Netherlands from March 5 to March 6.
As part of the conference, a presentation analysed football players’ appeals to Fifa over the past five years (2020-2025). The results were described as a “punch in the stomach for Cyprus” by the president of the Pancyprian Footballers Association (Pasp), Spyros Neophytides.
According to Pasp, Cyprus ranks second in Europe and leads the EU in the number of appeals filed by footballers against clubs. Among Uefa member football federations, Cyprus trails only Turkey, with Romania, Greece and Portugal following.
On the global stage, Cyprus ranks fourth in disputes involving top-tier clubs, behind Turkey, Saudi Arabia and China. When considering cases across all club levels, the top five nations are Turkey, Saudi Arabia, China, Romania and Cyprus, the report concludes.
The conference brought together legal experts in football to discuss pressing legal issues in the sport. Neophytides attended the conference alongside Pasp legal advisor Louis Hadjidimitriou.
