Cyprus has lodged formal complaints with both the United Nations and the European Union over Turkey’s illegal activities within the Buffer Zone, Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides announced Friday evening. Speaking to local media in Thessaloniki, Christodoulides highlighted Cyprus’s humanitarian role in the Middle East region.
Addressing recent provocations by Turkish forces in Deneia, Christodoulides stated, “We have already raised the issue with the United Nations, the European Union, and the Permanent Members of the Security Council. We are closely monitoring the situation.” He added that Turkey’s consistent incursions into the Buffer Zone are being managed by Cyprus, though they contribute to tensions as preparations for resuming peace talks are underway.
When asked about a potential permanent American military presence in Cyprus, Christodoulides clarified, “U.S. forces and others from EU countries primarily use Cypriot bases exclusively for humanitarian operations.” He pointed to Cyprus’s ongoing humanitarian role, currently aiding third-country nationals evacuating from the Middle East.
In response to whether he expects any outcomes from the upcoming November 8 meeting between Greek Foreign Minister Giorgos Gerapetritis and Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan, Christodoulides mentioned his recent meeting with the Greek Prime Minister, noting that the ministers are expected to exchange messages as part of the ongoing Greek-Turkish dialogue.
