Cyprus ranked 20th out of 27 EU countries for the use of renewable energy in transport in 2023, reaching 7.28 per cent compared to 7.22 per cent in 2022, Eurostat reported on Friday.
Across the EU, the share of renewable energy in transport rose to 10.8 per cent in 2023, up from 9.6 per cent in 2022. However, this remains 18.2 percentage points below the EU’s 2030 target of 29 per cent.
To meet this goal, an annual average increase of 2.6 percentage points is required between 2024 and 2030, significantly higher than the 0.43 percentage point annual increase recorded between 2014 and 2023.
Sweden led the EU with a renewable energy share of 33.7 per cent in transport, making it the only country to have already met the 2030 target.
Finland followed with 20.7 per cent, while the Netherlands and Austria recorded 13.4 per cent and 13.2 per cent, respectively.
At the other end of the scale, Croatia had the lowest share at 0.9 per cent, followed by Latvia at 1.4 per cent and Greece at 3.9 per cent.
The largest year-on-year increases were recorded in Sweden, which saw a 4.9 percentage point rise, while Austria and Portugal both increased by 2.5 percentage points.
In contrast, Latvia registered the largest decrease at -1.7 percentage points, followed by Croatia at -1.5 and Romania at -0.9.
