The Customs Department has handled two separate cases of customs violations at Larnaca Airport in recent weeks, involving undeclared luxury watches and duty-free tobacco products.
On 22 April 2025, customs officers stopped a 43-year-old Greek Cypriot arriving from Basel, Switzerland. During inspection, authorities discovered two undeclared luxury watches valued at €104,246.
The watches were initially confiscated but later returned to the passenger after he agreed to an out-of-court settlement, paying €7,620. The traveller also paid €19,809 in applicable duties and taxes, plus an additional €1,981 in financial charges.
In a separate case on 19 April 2025, police escorted a 48-year-old Greek Cypriot to the Airport Customs office following a search of his residence under court warrant. Officials found 29 cartons containing 200 cigarettes each, 6 cartons of heated tobacco products, and 20 packets containing 975 grams of tobacco.
The seized items lacked mandatory Greek and Turkish language markings, security features, and traceability codes. Authorities classified the products as duty-free and confiscated them.
The suspect was arrested for flagrant offences but later released after agreeing to an out-of-court settlement with payment of €2,800. The tobacco products were abandoned by the accused and will be destroyed.
