Turkey: Jubilation erupts after Syria’s Assad falls
The lightning fall of Bashar al-Assad in December caused celebration in Turkey, which has been hosting millions of Syrian refugees since the war in the neighbouring country broke out 13 years ago. Assad’s ousting creates openings and possible difficulties for Turkey, which strongly supported the armed opposition.
One of the challenges is the return of the Syrians to their home country, as Turkish society becomes increasingly uncomfortable with the rising number of refugees and migrants in the country. While Syrians in Turkey were in a celebratory mood, they face an uncertain future.
