EU institutions welcome start of Cyprus Presidency

European Union leadership has hailed the beginning of the Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the EU, marking the official takeover on 1 January. The European Council celebrated the transition on social media, declaring that “a new chapter begins” today for the bloc.
European Council President António Costa sent his personal wishes to President Nikos Christodoulides for a «successful Presidency of the Council of the EU». Costa stated that he looks forward to working closely with Cyprus over the next six months to build a “resilient and stronger Europe.”
European Parliament President Roberta Metsola also issued a message of support, writing in Greek to congratulate Christodoulides. “I am certain that, under your leadership, Europe can continue to grow as an autonomous Union, open to the world,” she noted. Metsola affirmed that the European Parliament stands ready to act as a “strong and reliable partner” throughout the Cypriot term.
