Klavdia, with her song “Asteromata” (Starry Eyes), has been selected to represent Greece at the Eurovision Song Contest 2025, held in Basel, Switzerland, from May 13 to 17.
“Asteromata,” which has been a long time favorite, was announced as the winner among a total of twelve songs that competed in the country’s national selection dubbed ”Ethnikós Telikós 2025.” It was broadcast live on ERT 1, Greece’s public television on Thursday night, January 30.
Klavdia, whose full name is Klavdia Papadopoulou, is a 22-year-old singer of Pontic descent. She became known to the public through the talent show “The Voice of Greece,” and released her debut single in 2022 with the title “Lonely Heart.”
The three-hour show was hosted by Eurovision legends Helena Paparizou (winner in 2005 and a representative for Greece in 2001 with the band “Antique”) and Sakis Rouvas, who has represented Greece twice, finishing 3rd in 2004 and 7th in 2009.
Both Rouvas and Paparizou, two of Greece’s most beloved pop singers, also performed on stage the four songs with which they represented the country in the Eurovision contest throughout the years. Renowned stage director Fokas Evangelinos oversaw the creative direction of the night. The event took place at the packed Christmas Theatre, a massive performing arts venue in Galatsi, Athens.
The winner was determined through a combination of public televoting (50 per cent), a Greek jury (25 per cent), and an international jury (25 per cent). In case of a tie, the public vote would have taken precedence and would have determined who will represent Greece in Eurovision 2025.
Greece returned to a televised selection process after several years of internal choices, where the country’s representation in Europe’s largest television event was decided internally by ERT, Greece’s national broadcaster.
The national selection was trending on X in Greece throughout the night under the hashtag #eurovisiongr. Fans had been buzzing about potential favorites since the lineup of the twelve songs was announced on January 10.
Klavdia’s emotional ballad “Asteromata” and Evangelia’s fusion track “Vale”, which both made it to the three finalists before the winner was announced, had earned significant attention online, with Youtube reviews and comments on social media expressing their opinions about them days before Greece’s national Eurovision final.
