With World Cup qualification out of reach, the focus has shifted to Greece’s young stars that are looking to make an impression in the final qualifiers with an eye set on the next major task: making Euro 2028.
Ivan Jovanovic has called up a series of fresh faces for the coming World Cup qualifiers against Scotland and Belarus on 16 and 19 November (AEDT), including Greek Australian Nectarios Triantis, Kifisia’s Andreas Tetteh and 18-year-old prospect Charalambos Kostoulas.
The Serbian coach assured that their call-ups are based on what they have shown now as players and not just on their potential.
“We always try to open up the national team roster to players who show that they are in good competitive shape,” he said ahead of the games on Monday (Greek time).
Speaking directly on Triantis, he noted:
“Triantis has been playing well in the MLS both last year and this year and plays in an important role for us. It is an opportunity to see a young player who is now familiar with Greece wearing the national team colours.”
Addressing the trio collectively, Jovanovic said: “All three are young players, so they can be part of the national team in the future”.
Greece has blooded numerous younger players in recent years, as evidenced by the fact that half the squad for these coming games was born from 2000 onwards.
There is certainly reason to believe that more experience will better prepare the young crop in the future as they take on the task of getting Greece into a major tournament again.
Jovanovic admitted it was hard to accept their early elimination from World Cup contention as he believed they showed they were capable of making the event, but he stressed the team will still look to achieve positive results.
“As for the two games ahead of us, they are of a high level…and because we are a team with perspective and talent, a group of players who live for the national team, we must continue to play well, represent Greece in the best possible way, and try to get back to playing well and winning.”
