In an unforseen godsend to archaeologists, linguists and historians, a military captain in Napoleon’s army uncovered the stele known as the Rosetta Stone in the town of Rosetta in Egypt.
The stone, believed to date from 196 BCE, is engraved with three versions of a decree from King Ptolemy V Epiphanese. Two sets of the text were in different versions of Egyptian, including hieroglyphs, while the third was in ancient Greek.
Using the much-more-understood Greek text, scholars were able to use the stone to decipher Egyptian hieroglyphs for the first time.
