Fifty-one years since the betrayal
Source: in-cyprus.com
FIFTY-ONE years today since the treacherous coup in Cyprus. A treacherous act whose consequences we live with to this day. We live with the consequences of the betrayal by the Athens junta and its representatives here, with Turkey’s continuing occupation of our territories.
THE ATHENS junta and its operatives in Cyprus, EOKA B, overthrew in a coup the elected President of the Republic, Ethnarch Makarios, on 15 July 1974. Through this action, they opened the gates to Turkey, which invaded five days later, on 20 July.
THE game was agreed upon, and this cannot be disputed in any way. First the coup, then the invasion. This is not conspiracy theory, but factual reality. At that time, the United States, Turkey, the Athens junta, EOKA B and other forces conspired against Cyprus and led to the known events, to the tragedy.
TODAY’S anniversary of the treacherous coup is not merely a point of reference, a memorial, an opportunity for speeches and events. These are necessary and largely repetitive. The requirement is different. Urgently now, given the passage of time, a way must be found to overturn the consequences of the coup, of the betrayal.
WE do not forget the betrayal. We do not forget fascism. This constitutes a stance towards the events and consequences that occurred. We cannot forget the betrayal against our country, our people. Memory must be preserved and strengthened. This is imperative. Historical memory is essential for all peoples.
FIFTY-ONE years later, we observe some formulating inaccuracies about the events of that summer of 1974. An attempt is being made to change history. This is done deliberately, to cover up the crimes against our homeland. We cannot accept this, we cannot tolerate it.
AT the same time, Hellenism in Cyprus is called upon to overturn the occupation realities. There is no other path for solving the Cyprus problem. There is no other course for our survival in this land. And we will repeat this at every opportunity, especially on such commemorative days. We will continue our efforts until the occupation realities are overturned and the unity of the Republic of Cyprus is restored. And this will happen only through liberation.
