A former British Museum director has called for the museum to share the Parthenon marbles with Greece.
Sir Mark Jones, former interim director at the British Museum told the Sunday Times that the British Museum should start charging tourists entry fees.
He then suggested that those funds should be put to use to help fund a potential partnership with Greece.
“If we ever find a way to create a partnership with the Greeks for the Parthenon Marbles, we must find a way to fund it,” he said.
He said the museum also needs funds to maintain its infrastructure.
Greece has long called for the return of the Parthenon marbles to display at the Acropolis Museum.
They have been displayed in London for over 200 years since they were removed by Lord Elgin when he was British ambassador to the Ottoman Empire in the early 19th century.
Some of the statues are still in Greece, so their origin country want to see them reunited.
