The popular video game Fortnite has launched a new chapter called “Myths and Mortals,” which is all about Greek mythology, meaning gamers can play as Greek gods, fight around Mount Olympus, and wield Zeus’ thunderbolt.
The new launch of the battle royale game by Epic, a video game company, was preceded by an innovative in-game event involving Pandora’s box, which leads into Chapter 5: Season 2 and brings multiple new locations, including Mount Olympus and the underworld, guarded by Cerberus.
Running alongside the new mythical locales are a number of power-ups and objects to collect, including the wings of Icarus, which can help a character to fly, Zeus’ thunderbolts which allow players to rise into the air and hurl lightning bolts at a target, and a weapon called the Chains of Hades that will be added later on.
Other new weapons include the Gatekeeper Shotgun, which fires three rounds and has a mythic variant which can be stolen from Cerberus. The Huntress DMR of Artemis is a long-range rifle, while Ares’ Warforged AR offers high DPS at the price of significant recoil.
Which Greek gods can Fortnite gamers play with?
With a new season comes a new battle pass, and players who buy this season’s will be able to unlock lots of Greek gods, including Aphrodite, Medusa, Poseidon, Zeus, Hades, Artemis, and Cerberus.
“Myths and Mortals” signifies a major shift for Fortnite with the launch of Chapter 5. While the battle royale mode is as strong as ever, the new chapter sees the legendary game become a platform for other forms of entertainment, having launched with Lego Fortnite, Rocket Racing, and Fortnite Festival.
In February, Disney invested $1.5 billion in Epic, the developer of Fortnite, as part of a plan to build an “expansive and open games and entertainment universe.”
Fortnite was first released in 2017 and is available in six distinct game mode versions that otherwise share the same general gameplay and game engine. This includes Fortnite Battle Royale, a free-to-play royale game wherein up to a hundred players fight to be the last character standing. It also pertains to Fortnite: Save the World, a cooperative hybrid tower defense-shooter and survival game in which up to four players fight off zombie-like creatures and defend items with traps and fortifications, and Fortnite Creative in which players are given complete freedom to create maps and battle arenas.
The latest chapter of Fortnite, which allows gamers to play as Greek gods, went live on March 8th, with the new battle pass costing 950 V-Bucks in-game currency to unlock. Players can earn up to 1,500 V-Bucks back by playing the game. They can also progress their battle pass until May 24th, which is when Chapter 5, Season 2 will come to an end.
Epic is an American company, based in Cary, North Carolina. It was founded by Tim Sweeney as Potomac Computer Systems in 1991, originally located in his parents’ house in Potomac, Maryland.
